Qualified with a BSc and BSc Hons in Microbiology from Potchefstroom University and then obtained a Masters in Microbiology and PhD in Dentistry from University of Pretoria.   He has also completed two diploma courses on ‘Leadership and Management of Higher Education Institutions’ from the University of Warwick in the UK and the Galilee International Management Institute in Israel.  In his academic career he progressed to the level of Associate Professor.

From July 1999 – June 2009 he was Head of the Stomatological Research Unit in the School of Dentistry, at the University of Pretoria.

From July 2009 – December 2011 he I took up the position as Deputy Dean (Postgraduate & Research) at Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.

From January 2012 – current, he is the Director Professional Services in the College of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.  Effectively heading Professional Services and all logistical and administration activities in the CHS.

As part of his role in the CHS, the DPS is actively involved in, and driving the defining, planning and implementation of strategies in the CHS.

As an academic his publications include 9 research reports, 34 peer reviewed scientific publications, 111 published Scientific Abstracts and he has delivered in excess of 100 oral presentations and more than 70 poster presentation at National and International Scientific Meetings.
